Styles and Vibes - An Entry Point to the Deep Rabbit Hole of Early American Stringband Music with Kit Stovepipe

Conference Room 3:30-4:30 pm

This listening workshop will focus on the influence and relationship other genres of music had on early stringband and blues material.

We’ll explore the ways that minstrel, jazz, and pop songs of the day were woven into the recorded folk music tapestry, and how popular vernacular music of the 20s was transformed in the hands of hillbilly and blues performers.

Another name for this workshop could be “I used to think that song sucked until I heard it done by a different group.”

Dances of Southwestern Pennsylvania with Larry Edelman

Ballroom 4:45-5:45 pm

This workshop will present square dances and couple dances collected from rural communities in Pennsylvania in the 1980’s.

String Band-ify-it! with Dumpster Joe

Conference Room 4:45-5:45 pm

Beginner tips on how to reinterpret your favourite 20s and 30s jazz, pop, and blues tunes into stringband arrangements. We’ll listen to the original recordings, play our version, and then breakdown how we choose what parts to play.

Saturday

Playing Fiddle on the Mandolin with Kaden Hurst

Conference Room 11:45 am-12:45 pm

Even when playing mandolin, we call them fiddle tunes for a reason. The ways tunes are performed, phrased, and embellished all have their roots in the physicality of fiddling. This workshop is all about how we can emulate those qualities in our mandolin playing to get more in the groove, more grounded in our improvisation, and more in touch with our instruments.

Bass Fiddling with Noa Eve

Lounge 11:45 am-12:45 pm

For folks interested in using a bow to play tunes on bass. Beginner to advanced are all welcome. It'll be a breakdown and presentation of a few tunes I play, what goes into selecting and arranging them for bass, and ways to work with and around the various technical issues presented by playing bass.

Tune Up Your fiddle, Rosin Up Your Bow, and let’s bust down! with Amy Alvey

Ballroom 1:00-2:00 pm

We’ll learn a fiddle tune that will introduce techniques to help get the old-time groove. Specific attention will be placed on bowing and articulation as we go. We’ll work on execution, drive, and melodic variations to pay homage to source fiddlers while developing your unique sound. Other concepts may be explored based on interest, including but not limited to: rags, alternate tunings, tone, and music theory.

Matchbox Crankie-Making Workshop with Sue Truman

Conference Room 1:00-2:00 pm

A crankie is a form of folkart, popular in the 1800s, and this workshop will let you make your own miniature version. You can color a scroll that’s already illustrated or choose a blank scroll and design your own story. Next, load the scroll into the matchbox (Sue will help)! Take home an adorable crankie along with a folkart bottle cap pie, and a tiny twiggy broom. You’ll have your own analog entertainment system. Everyone is welcome!

Muscle Memory Building for Clawhammer Banjo with Cameron DeWhitt

Ballroom 3:30-4:30 pm

One of the most important skills for learning tunes by ear is building muscle memory, because we can't use our brains to listen if they're busy telling our fingers what to do. In this workshop you'll learn the most efficient way to practice the most common left hand pathways and their corresponding right hand movements. Let's make boring decisions in advance so we can make interesting decisions in our jams!

Song Circle with Steph Noll

Conference Room 3:30-4:30 pm

Bring a favorite song or round to share or just come sing or strum along.

Take Care of Your Bow (and Your Bow Will Take Care of You) with Ruth Werner

The Wide World of String Band Guitar with Mark Kilianski

Ballroom 4:45-5:45 pm

The groove is in your hands! Guitar is the glue of a string band’s collective rhythm. We’ll explore many elements of this broad style, including timing, tone, chord choices, bass runs, jam etiquette, practice techniques, and more. We’ll listen to a wide array of approaches to guitar across the Old Time genre and discuss this world of possibilities, as well the history and development of the music.
